An ordered list can be created just by typing the corresponding number, followed by a period and a space. It's also perfect for those who do not want to remember any of the usual button combinations for formatting. Markdown is simple, and thus perfect for anyone who'd much rather concentrate on the words on the screen rather than the mess of buttons along the top, the sides, or the bottom. As such, any interface which takes you out of "the flow" is just another distraction to deal with. Writing is a bit like meditation - you get into "the zone" where words flow naturally. You can simply edit the text with any editor on your phone, tablet, or computer. This becomes a non-issue due to the fact Markdown works like any other text file merge. Those of you who have edited together with others know this problem all too well - sometimes it becomes a real pain to merge all the changes together. Though the syntax is quite extensive and covers the full gamut from bolding text to creating footnotes in an interactive document, the basics of what you'll need to know to start writing quickly and efficiently are easily learned in an afternoon. Markdown discards all of the distractions and lets the writer focus on just the essentials. I think the functional approach makes the process easy to modify and reason with. While these apps do have keyboard shortcuts for some functions, they often aren't convenient or intuitive. Within the main function are a series of other functions to handle each subtask and return the latest state of the HTML. Every time the markdown changes, run the function to output HTML. I like to think of the HTML as a function of the markdown. The list of things that happens between markdown and html is always growing. We take steps to convert any images to our hosted service, for performance and security, and we have other security-related restrictions. We also do more than running a markdown engine. For every write of a document like this there are going to likely be several orders of magnitude more reads. I really feel like this should be done at write time. Since this is clearly something we put a lot of thought into, I'll talk about our approach.Ī user submits a field we call body_markdown, and that is saved to their DB, and before it's written, we take that text and turn it into a field called processed_html. ![]() There's a genral rule for for asset transformation: always keep the original ![]() All the responses here are right, and I definitely would stress point ![]()
